Promo video featuring some of my past games

Check out this promo video with a few students playing some games I worked on! :

In the video you can see footage of the students playing Inklings and Lexica, along with a couple other games I had a tiny bit of involvement on. It's so exciting to see kids enjoy these! (Read more)

Interview for my undergrad

This month I was featured in my undergrad's newsletter!

Not only did my art technique improve through my studio art and art history classes, but I learned the arguably more important analytical skills necessary to evaluate my work. I have Ben Schachter, Br. Mark Floreanini, O.S.B., and the late Br. Nathan Cochran, O.S.B., to thank. Now that I have wandered over to the design field, this skill has become even more critical.

Facelift

Er, this site got one, that is! I just finished redoing the visual design of my site. The first go around was largely focused on learning WordPress, increasing my HTML & CSS knowledge, and introducing myself to a bit of PHP. The goal this time was geared toward the visuals - clearer, better use of white space, a little less clutter, and unifying the look and feel. (Read more)

Boarding the Pinterest Train (of Boards)

For the past few years I've used Evernote to save reference material that I find around the web. More often that not I will save something and then immediately forget about it; meanwhile, it gets buried in the depths of the app as I add new material. This afternoon I was struck with the urge to give Pinterest a shot, so I spent a great amount of the day sorting through my saved reference and migrating them over there. (Read more)

New Work: The Art of Game Design 2nd Edition

Just added new work to the Schell Games Graphic Design page! I recently completed the cover art for the 2nd Edition of The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell. I collaborated with another artist and the art director on the design, then created the final art in Illustrator. The most important guideline was to keep the flavor of the original cover. Wireframes Are Your Friend And Here Is Why

To design an interface, first we have to get to the root of the problem it's trying to solve.  What is the goal for this particular interface, and how do we measure it?  Your goals might look like some of these:

  • "How do we design for mobile to reflect the essence of our existing brand, while making it as usable as possible for our customers?"
  • "How can we design these games so that they are fun for preschoolers?"
  • "What can we do to increase our email list sign-ups?

Employee Spotlight interview

I am July's employee spotlight at work!  Which means I got to answer a bunch of fun questions like these:

What inspires you?
Looking deeply at work from great designers and artists, but what I love the most is when they share their processes. Getting a peek into both why they make their choices and how they execute their work inspires me to keep elevating my own craft and the intention behind it. (Read more)

Gold Award for Inklings!

A game I was the UI Lead on has just won the Gold Award at the International Serious Play Festival!

Though I promise the game has a lot of whimsy, and is not all serious. In the game you're introduced to a creature made of ink, appropriately named Blott, who needs to repair the underground home by fixing wrong words and sentences. (Read more)

The Four Elements Blanket

Once upon a time around 2008, I had my 15 minutes of internet fame in the Avatar: the Last Airbender crowd for a blanket I made based on the show emblems for earth, water, fire, and air.  I created a pattern so that others may also know the joy of having their very own Avatar blanket.  (Read more)

Firstly

I have actually had a blog since 2002, before the word “blog” was even a word.  Well, I don’t know this for certain. That might be a lie.  I do know the word wasn’t anywhere near as widespread as it is now.  But that old blog has long since fell into idleness and since I have wanted to reboot my site for some time, along with that I thought I’d try a new attempt at a blog.
